Pick something you HATE today and DO IT.
Yep, you read that right.
Homeownership means home maintenance. And home maintenance includes some really unpleasant tasks. Sure, you could probably find somebody reputable and pay them to do it for you, but if you can get past your excuses and just START, there can be so much satisfaction and a huge sense of accomplishment in some good old DIY!
Let me tell you about how much I dread yardwork. We won’t even talk about the procrastination that went down yesterday when I knew that my day needed to include ripping out old roots and stumps, digging holes, and getting covered in Carolina clay from head to toe in the summer heat.
But there were moments, even though my back was aching and every muscle in my body was exhausted, where I could feel determination and satisfaction take over and propel me forward.
Yes, finding the motivation to START was hard, but I felt like a total rockstar once I was DOING it.
How’s that for a metaphor for basically anything you don’t “feel like” doing in life?
And to sit on my front porch and admire the freshly planted boxwoods and pile of old branches at the curb felt like a greater accomplishment than working the job I love each day, because it feels SO GOOD to know I did it!
I’m not telling you this story to brag about my landscaping skills…these plants have lived for one day. One. So that remains to be seen.
I’m telling you this to share with you that the thing that you know you “should” do can no longer nag you from the back of your mind or taunt you from the sidelines of your life if it’s DONE.
Successful people push themselves, even when nobody’s watching.
So go eat that frog.
Want to build some character and feel accomplished this weekend? Here is a list of tough, but satisfying home projects:
