Have you ever felt like you’re not where you’re meant to be? Maybe you can’t quite put your finger on it. Maybe it’s a giant pink elephant in the foyer. But something about your house just doesn’t feel like home anymore.
You can ALWAYS choose a fresh start. And when you consciously choose happiness, the universe has your back.
My Valentine’s Day closings this year represented just that.
Debbie moved into her townhouse about 2 years ago. With its fully finished basement, she excitedly jumped on it, because it had plenty of room for her and her daughters and grandbaby on the way. Her aggressive offer was accepted over 8 other offers, and she was over the moon excited to live happily ever after with her girls.
But the longer they lived in their home, the more apparent it became that something just didn’t feel right. Despite their lovely neighbors, responsive HOA, and ample space, Debbie found herself STILL not fully unpacked after almost 2 years, because it never quite felt like home. Her bad knee made going up and down the steps to do laundry a challenge, and as her sweet baby grandaughter started to walk, she longed for a fenced in yard where she could run free and play.
Sometimes a house is great…but just not great for YOU.
We began house hunting last summer, and after several discouraging trips to visit and rule out neighborhoods, Debbie became frustrated. We casually watched new listings, but nothing seemed to feel quite right, until one Sunday afternoon when we decided to visit a couple new neighborhoods that Debbie had discounted before.
We weren’t inside this house for more than a minute, and we knew it was the one. It wasn’t JUST that it ticked all Debbie’s boxes…the bedrooms, the layout, the flat backyard, the cul de sac lot, and no steps…
It was a feeling. I watched Debbie visibly relax and experience the warmth and coziness of home, visualizing her life happening in this house. Her entire mood changed when she eagerly asked, “Where do I sign?”
If I hadn’t have felt it too, I might have been nervous when I was given 3 weeks to get her current house under contract, right up against a family holiday trip. But when something is meant to happen, things have a way of falling into place. And that is exactly what happened.
Debbie’s townhouse was under contract in less than one day on the market and proved itself to be a worthwhile investment. It was a quick, smooth, and downright pleasant transaction, and after meeting the buyers, we all knew that everyone involved was going to end up right where they belong.
It seemed only appropriate that we closed on both properties on Valentine’s Day. The long day of walkthroughs, long drives, and hopping from attorney to attorney passed quickly, because every moment was touched by this feeling of a fresh start. After days on end of rain in Charlotte, the sun was shining, the sky was that shade of Carolina blue that breathes happiness into any day, and we just knew that everything was as it should be.
I picked up my own little Valentine from school, sugared up and bursting to tell me about all his candy and cards, and drove him home to our brick house with black shutters with the downstairs guest room and the big wooded backyard and the Jack & Jill bathroom for the boys. I couldn’t help but feel grateful, remembering that day when we walked into the house that felt like home. Moving anywhere is stressful and filled with uncertainty, but that feeling of home is undeniable.
Congratulations, Debbie. Serving you was a reminder that buying a new home isn’t always about onward and upward or bigger and better, but rather about fresh starts and choosing happiness. Change takes courage, and yours has resulted in the one story house of your dreams with room for all the people you love…even space for a special little girl to run and play as she grows.
If you are ready to start fresh, choose happy, and find that place in the world that feels like home, let’s do it. The universe has your back, and so do I.
